Five Things I Love About Firefox 3

Five things I love about Firefox 3

  • Because this is a beta version, most of my extensions and themes don’t work in F3…and I don’t miss ‘em. I’ve been using it all day and haven’t had a single withdrawal symptom.
  • Fast. Hella fast. Hecka fast. So damn fast. The memory management of Firefox 3 is slick. It caches less, stores image data more efficiently, and plugs memory leaks from extensions before they happen. This all comes from of the kind of nerdy nerdy attention to detail that was a feature of pre-Moore’s law programming, when bits were carefully placed like bricks in an arch. Hooray for OCD programming!
  • Oh Bookmarks! Ye annoy me less! You are now a one-click thing on the navigation bar, with a cute star icon instead of a time-eating top menu monster.
  • Full Page Zoom. If you don’t like squinting, download this browser. Hitting Ctrl + makes EVERYTHING get bigger, including images. This feature eliminates the “Big Text Stomps Nice Layout” problem we saw in earlier versions.
  • Tab quickmenu.

Speed Up Your Firefox Start-up Time

    clipped from www.makeuseof.com
Firefox may be my browser of choice but there are times when it is REALLY slow, so slow in fact that I am sorely tempted to defect to Opera or even *gasp* Safari!
But you don’t have to wail and despair any more! During a little stroll through SourceForge, I found an interesting program called Firefox Preloader which was short on technical details but long on prospects. It claims to be able to “improve Firefox’s start-up time”.
From the little I was able to find out, Preloader pre-loads various parts of your Firefox browser into the memory (presumably the most important parts) so that when you want it to start, it is able to open much faster than normal. In fact when I clicked on the Fox logo to start the browser, it shot open like a politician being caught in a brothel with his pants down. The tabs fired open one by one as if they had drank five cups of coffee each. Firefox is now so fast it’s unnerving me.

    Fix for hijacked firefox homepage

  • It seems like other low and dirty software companies have done similar things in the past using the user.js file that overrides the default Firefox settings and I was able to find info on how those were fixed - knowing that, here is how to fix it:

    1. Close any open FireFox windows
    2. Using Windows Explorer, go to
    C:\Documents and Settings\ (user name) \Application
    Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(random letters) .default
    3. Open the “User.js” file in notepad.
    4. Delete the line that reads:
    user_pref(browser.startup.homepage, http://www.rocketdivision.com);
    5. Save and close the document, then restart FireFox
    6. Surf to the page you want as your homepage.
    7. Click on Tools then select Options from the drop down menu
    8. In the General Screen, there will be a section titled “Home
Page”. From here, click the “Use Current Page” button to set your
    homepage.

    Make Mozilla Load Faster

    Try It!
    clipped from www.sciencetext.com

    1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return

    2. Search for network.http.pipelining, if it is set to false, double click it and will toggle to true

    3. Clear the search, and search this time for network.http.proxy.pipelining, double click to set to true

    4. Clear and search for network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, double click and change the value from its default (usually 4) to 30, this makes Firefox make more requests to sites you visit

    5. Now, copy this phrase to your clipboard, nglayout.initialpaint.delay and right click anywhere in the about:config page. Create a new “integer” and paste the phrase nglayout.initialpaint.delay. Now, set its value to 0, to speed up browser response.

    firefox popup window resize

not sure if anyone else has had this problem.....but if so, here goes!

    Firefox Popup Window Resize

For some reason, some popups in Firefox have been opening with the wrong size for the content displayed and the resize feature was disabled for the windows.

After some research, I found that in Firefox you can override this behavior by changing one of the many user preferences.

    To do this

    1. Type about:config in the location bar and press enter

    2. Search for the "dom.disable_window_open_feature.resizable" entry

    3. Change the boolean value from false to true

Setting this to true will prevent a window from disabling the resize feature.

Weave: Integrating Online Services with Firefox

Weave: Integrating Online Services with Firefox

This year, browsers started to realize that they have a great opportunity: to extend their local bookmarking services and add an online layer.

The first browser that integrated this feature was the IE-based Maxthon, then Opera added a bookmark synchronization feature to its desktop and mobile clients. Now Mozilla tests a similar service called
Weave, that's available as an extension for Firefox 3 Beta 2, but unlike Opera and Maxthon, Mozilla's product will be open to third-parties.
For now, Weave lets you synchronize your bookmarks and your history, but the service should be extended to other kinds of data: passwords, cookies, settings, sessions, extensions. In this limited test, the only service provider is Mozilla, but once the platform matures, we can expect to see important service providers like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft. Instead of using Google Toolbar, you'll be able to bookmark web pages to Google Bookmarks directly from Firefox.
