Cholesterol and Heart Disease -- A Phony Issue

Cholesterol and Heart Disease -- A Phony Issue

By Mary Enig, PhD

Blood cholesterol levels between 200 and 240 mg/dl are normal. These levels have always been normal. In older women, serum cholesterol levels greatly above these numbers are also quite normal, and in fact they have been shown to be associated with longevity.
Since 1984, however, in the United States and other parts of the western world, these normal numbers have been treated as if they were an indication of a disease in progress or a potential for disease in the future.
As a result of some of this misinformation, which was purposefully planted by the leadership of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in 1984, many hundreds of thousands of people are treated with expensive medications to prevent the development of a non-existent illness.

bananas

If you watch closely during tennis tournaments, you’ll notice Rafael Nadal eating a banana during short breaks. Why? Cause banana has a combination of carbohydrates and vitamin B6 that will provide energy boosts for at least another 90 minutes.

Amazing, isn’t it? Bananas provide the most value to athletes compared to other fruits. Even a banana at breakfast is good in helping boost energy at the start of every day.

Here’s a nutritional chart percentage of the stuff that is contained in banana.

nutrients

  • Vitamin B6 is the vitamin needed by people who feel weak, irritated easily and have difficulty in sleeping.
  • Potassium regulates blood pressure and reduces chances of high blood pressure and stroke.
  • Potassium enables muscles to contract and expand smoothly during exercises. It reduces cramps.
  • Potassium helps to rid fluid retention .
  • Carbohydrate found in bananas contribute to the daily energy usage.

Lizard spit that can control diabetes

    clipped from www.dailymail.co.uk
It is pink and grey, 2ft long and one of the only two venomous lizards in the world.

Yet the Gila Monster has proved an unlikely ally in the battle to control diabetes.

Scientists have isolated a chemical in its saliva which is similar to a human hormone that helps regulate blood sugar.

    Gila monster

The Gila (pronounced heela) Monster, which is native to the desert areas of the U.S. and Mexico, eats only three or four times a year and a compound known as exendin-4 produced in its salivary glands helps it digest these meals very slowly.

This quality has been copied and produced synthetically in the injectable drug exenatide, which is being used to treat type 2 diabetes.

Type 2, which mainly affects the over-40s, occurs when the body gradually loses the ability to process blood sugar, leading to high levels which can damage body organs.

The companies Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals are launching the drug today under the brand name Byetta.

    Migraines linked with brain damage

    clipped from news.yahoo.com

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) -

People with migraines also may be suffering from some brain damage as brain cells swell and become starved of oxygen -- a finding that may help explain why migraine sufferers have a higher risk of stroke, researchers
    reported on Sunday.

Similar brain damage can occur with concussions and after strokes, the researchers said in this week's issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience.

They said their findings suggest that migraine sufferers should not simply get pain relief but should take drugs that prevent the migraine, which is often preceded by "aura" -- a series of visual disturbances that can include flashes of light or black spots.

They saw a swelling occur and the brain cells became starved of oxygen. The nerve cells were damaged -- specifically the dendrites, the long, thin spikes that stretch from one nerve cell to another.

    Supplement helps children's brains.

    clipped from www.smh.com.au
A SIMPLE dietary supplement may help improve concentration, memory and problem-solving in children.
Scans on four British children who took an omega oil supplement for three months showed their brains developed dramatically - by the equivalent of three years - over that period.
The four children in the pilot study on the effects of diet on young brains were aged between eight and 13
They took supplement called VegEPA, which contains a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids,

After three months the children's reading age had advanced by more than a year, their handwriting was neater and they paid more attention in class.

The scans showed an increase in nerve fibres in their brain, said the lead researcher, Basant Puri, from London's Imperial College. "It means you have more connections and greater density of nerve cells, in the same way a tree grows more branches," said Professor Puri, whose study is yet to undergo peer review.

Some advice to take to heart -- take a nap

CHICAGO, Feb 12 (Reuters Life!) - Regular naps are good for your heart, researchers said on Monday.

Those who made it a practice of napping at least three times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes had a 37 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease compared to non-nappers.

A six-year study of nearly 24,000 Greek adults found those who regularly took midday naps lowered their risk of dying from heart disease by more than a third.

The relationship was even stronger among employed men as compared to unemployed men, with nappers apparently relieving some of the work-related stress that was bad for their hearts,
researchers at the University of Athens Medical School said.

    The top five cancer-causing foods

    clipped from www.newstarget.com
    Hot dogs
    Processed meats and bacon
    Doughnuts
    French fries
    Chips / crackers / cookies
Besides avoiding these foods, what else can consumers do to reduce their risk of cancer? The main things are simple: Eat unprocessed foods and base your diet largely on plants. Consume foods that have omega-3 fats and other essential fatty acids. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables; many common ones have known cancer-fighting properties. Get regular vigorous exercise, since tumors cannot thrive in highly oxygenated environments. Keep your blood sugar stable to avoid being an all-you-can-eat buffet for cancer cells.
Preventing cancer is actually quite straightforward. Even the World Health Organization says that 70 percent of all cancers can be prevented with simple changes in diet and lifestyle. The truth is that most people give themselves cancer through the foods, drinks and products they choose to consume. In my opinion, over 90 percent of cancers are easily preventable.

Cancer is Big Business in the U.S., so big that the cancer industry doesn't want anybody messing with their money!

Cancer research isn't about finding cures; it's about finding drugs that can be sold at enormous profit.

There are many natural aids and even cures, but they're outlawed by those charged with protecting the public. Arm yourself with knowledge! The medical establishment isn't trained to keep you well; they're trained to keep you coming back, time and time again.

New research shows vitamin D slashes risk of cancers by 77 percent; cancer industry refuses to support cancer prevention
Exciting new research conducted at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska has revealed that supplementing with vitamin D and calcium can reduce your risk of cancer by an astonishing 77 percent. This includes breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer and other forms of cancer. This research provides strong new evidence that vitamin D is the single most effective medicine against cancer, far outpacing the benefits of any cancer drug known to modern science.
Note that these astonishing effects were achieved on what many nutritionists consider to be a low dose of vitamin D. Exposure to sunlight, which creates even more vitamin D in the body, was not tested or considered

Skimmed milk direct from the 'magic' cow Marge

IT may soon be possible to produce skimmed milk straight from the cow - a development that could revolutionise the dairy industry.

Scientists in New Zealand have discovered some cows have genes which give them a natural ability to deliver skimmed milk.

The company identified a cow, Marge, with the required genes. As an added bonus, the milk contains omega-three oils.

"The eureka moment was when we found her daughters produced milk just like their mother," said a company spokesman. The development of a commercial herd is now likely, reports the magazine 'Chemistry & Industry'.

Milk does a body good - and may protect against cancer

Key milk nutrients, calcium and vitamin D, may do more than just help keep your bones strong. Increasing intake of calcium and vitamin D could reduce the risk for cancer in women by at least 60 percent, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. (1)

The four-year clinical trial included more than one thousand women over the age of 55 in one of three supplement groups:
    1) calcium (1400-1500mg) plus vitamin D (1100 IU vitamin D)
    2) calcium only (1400-1500 mg) or
    3) a placebo.

The researchers found that the risk of developing cancer was 60 percent lower for those who took calcium and vitamin D and 47 percent lower for those taking calcium alone, compared to the placebo.
