Fix for hijacked firefox homepage

  • It seems like other low and dirty software companies have done similar things in the past using the user.js file that overrides the default Firefox settings and I was able to find info on how those were fixed - knowing that, here is how to fix it:

    1. Close any open FireFox windows
    2. Using Windows Explorer, go to
    C:\Documents and Settings\ (user name) \Application
    Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(random letters) .default
    3. Open the “User.js” file in notepad.
    4. Delete the line that reads:
    user_pref(browser.startup.homepage, http://www.rocketdivision.com);
    5. Save and close the document, then restart FireFox
    6. Surf to the page you want as your homepage.
    7. Click on Tools then select Options from the drop down menu
    8. In the General Screen, there will be a section titled “Home
Page”. From here, click the “Use Current Page” button to set your
    homepage.

RIAA: Transferring Music From Legally Bought CD to Computer is Illegal

We don’t normally post stuff like copyfight and the RIAA’s quest to quash music piracy through lawsuits (blogs like Boing Boing covered this subject well enough), but this recent article in the Washington Post is too good to pass up: apparently the RIAA now maintains that it’s illegal for you to transfer music from a legally bought CD to your computer!

In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry’s lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.

    Kiss of the Assassin

Observing the habitat of the Assassin bug and counting the number of bugs noted by exterminators has been tested as a very inexpensive, yet accurate method to determine if children need to be tested for the presence of the parasite, a protozoan called Trypanosoma cruzi.

Good news for the people in Peru and other South American countries plagued by Chaga's Disease.
    clipped from www.reuters.com
LONDON (Reuters) - A new, low-cost screening strategy could make it easier for poor countries to target and treat Chagas disease, a deadly parasite-borne condition found mainly in Latin America, according to a new study.

But a team of U.S. researchers showed they could use easy-to-collect data on the number of insects found in homes during spraying campaigns to identify clusters of at-risk children who should be tested for Chagas disease.

"The exterminators are really telling us what kids need to be tested," said Levy, who conducted the study while at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "It is very easy to add on to existing programs."

Chagas disease is usually transmitted to humans by a blood-sucking insect called an assassin bug or a kissing bug. The insect carries a protozoan parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi, which kills more people in the region each year than any other parasite-born disease, including malaria, Levy said.

    Friendship between men

    clipped from en.wikipedia.org

the Austrian philosopher Otto Weininger claimed that:

"There is no friendship between men that has not an element of sexuality in it, however little accentuated it may be in the nature of the friendship, and however painful the idea of the sexual element would be. But it is enough to remember that there can be no friendship unless there has been some attraction to draw the men together. Much of the affection, protection, and nepotism between men is due to the presence of unsuspected sexual compatibility." (Sex and Character, 1903)
