Encyclopedia of Life: An Extraordinary New Online Reference Source

On Wednesday, May 9th this week, the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) was formally launched at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. It will be an extraordinary online reference source and database of all living species on Earth. The EOL’s ultimate goal is to provide scientifically accurate and easily accessible information on some 1.8 million known species of animals, plants and microbial organisms for researchers, students, educators and the general public.

The EOL is the joint brain child of Dr. E. O. Wilson, Professor Emeritus at Harvard University and one of the leading naturalists in the world, and Dr. Daniel Janzen, Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, who was among the first to conceive of such a fully-vetted, online reference source. It is currently supported by grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. (see link to EOL’s main website)
