YouTube to increase quality of streamed videos

YouTube co-founder Steve Chen has confirmed that high-quality YouTube video streams will be available soon.

What is stopping YouTube from offering higher quality video so far is really the time required to properly buffer the video. Hence, the reason for this experiment as opposed to a rapid rollout.

A point worth noting is that Chen confirms that YouTube internally saves all submitted video at their native resolution. Still, a large portion of YouTube videos are pretty poor quality to begin with, so streaming them in high-quality mode isn’t going to help much in those instances.

High-quality YouTube videos will be available to everyone within three months.
